Example tree symbolism paragraph:
"My tree has black branches that represent me because I am shy, quiet, and I like to keep to myself most of the time. The leaves are very colorful, representing my family and friends: loud, crazy, and outgoing. In the center of my tree is a black hole where I keep my thoughts built up when I decide not to tell anyone my feelings. Last of all is the maze taking the place of the roots. This represents me trying to find my way, who my real friends are, what I want to be in life and what I want to do with myself. The maze isn't completed yet because I still haven't figured life out yet." Example Tree comparison/contrast paragraph to Melinda: "My tree has many similarities with Melinda's life. For example, my black hole is similar to Melinda since she doesn't share her feelings to talk to anyone about what happened to her. She would "walk home to an empty house without a word" (82). She was too scared to tell anyone. My maze is another similarity. Melinda is figuring out her life as the story progresses until she decides that "it happened. There's no avoiding it. No forgetting it" (197). From there she can start to piece her life back together has she comes out of the hazy maze of her freshman year.
