Animal Farm is an allegory for the Russian Revolution. Each character in Animal Farm actually represents a real life person or group of people. This powerpoint will give you the background information you need to know to get the characters straight. The guided notes closely follow. We will fill out this reading guide (mostly in class!) as we read this short novella -- only 97 pages!. Not sure if you have the right answers? Once we have the character connections down, it's also helpful to have a general understanding of the Russian Revolution. The test is multiple choice, T/F, short answer and a paragraph response. What else should you study? Non-Fiction: - know different types of non-fiction (newspaper, advertisement, editorial, biography..) - what is the purpose of a non-fiction text? (for example: advertisement = persuade) - what is bias? why is it important to identify it in non-fiction texts? - what is audience? be able to give an example of when you would alter the content of your story or the words you use depending on your audience (for example: how would a story change when telling your grandma vs. your best friend?) - what is tone? mood? (we've been talking about this since AUGUST!) - be able to read a movie review and determine specific phrases or words that show the author's bias/opinion I found a great article with 14 easy steps for determining bias within an article! Check it out if you are still a bit confused.

Is this author for or against same-sex marriage? How does this author feel about the movie, Lone Survivor, that is currently in theaters?What words and phrases does he use that prove his opinion? This author reviews Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Does she think the book is worthy of reading? Does she point out any flaws with the novel? How can you prove what her opinion is?
