Here is a copy of Journal #1 which we will complete in class on Monday, Sept. 9th. Notes from today (9/6): Symbolism: an image that represents a quality or idea. Examples: the flag represents freedom, the United States, liberty, patriotism. A dove represents innocence, peace, purity, spirituality Motif: a recurring image, phrase, or symbol which through repetition creates a theme. Examples: In Speak, Anderson uses Melinda's mouth and mirrors as recurring images. By marking when these appear while reading, we can notice commonalities and see how Anderson is producing a theme. <--- Make a T-Chart to help you summarize the information you collected from following the TREE, MIRRORS, or Melinda's MOUTH. When we look at how Melinda was feeling in these situations where trees are mentioned, we can more easily see the symbolism: the tree's growth represents Melinda's personal growth as she struggles to "speak."

Students are beginning to draft their personal narratives about a teacher that has positively or negatively influenced their lives.
We used this to brainstorm ideas and before completing this outline. Here is a sample narrative that follows the same prompt in case you need inspiration or an example. The summative test over Speak will be on Monday, September 23rd. You will need to know: tone, mood, theme, motif, symbolism, personification, and simile. You will also be asked basic comprehension questions over the book and write a paragraph response similar to our journals we completed in class. 40 summative points. |
