Here are the controversial topic options for your research/persuasive paper. Please find at least 9 facts from procon.org to complete your research notes. A bibliography is a list of sources (books, journals, Web sites, periodicals, etc.) one has used for researching a topic. Bibliographies are sometimes called "References" (APA) or "Works Cited" (MLA) depending on the style format you are using. A bibliography usually just includes the bibliographic information (i.e., the author, title, publisher, etc.). An annotation is a summary and/or evaluation. Therefore, an annotated bibliography includes a summary and/or evaluation of each of the sources. Depending on your project or the assignment, your annotations may do one or more of the following.
Assess: After summarizing a source, it may be helpful to evaluate it. Is it a useful source? How does it compare with other sources in your bibliography? Is the information reliable? Is this source biased or objective? What is the goal of this source? 1. Is it useful? Explain how…. 2. Is it reliable? - When was it published? - Where was it published? - Are there universities, research centers, organizations mentioned? - Are there statistics, data, and research included? - Who is quoted? Professors, researchers, prominent well-known people? Here is the rubric that will be used when grading your annotated bib entries.

For the next month, we will be researching a controversial topic. During this time, you will find at 2-3 credible sources, write two annotated bibliography entires, create an outline in MLA format (all of that = Research EO: 100 summative points). Then you will write a persuasive paper using the research and outline you already created (Persuasive Essay EO = 100 summative points). There is plenty of time planned for this unit, but you must stay focused and on track in order to get this done in the proper order and format. (There are a lot of little directions!!) First.... ethos, pathos, and logos. Here is a great website with examples. Here is the PowerPoint we took these notes over.
Check out this video that gives examples of ethos, pathos, and logos in print advertisements and commercials. We watched this video by Prince Ea about overusing technology. Can you find examples of ethos, pathos, and logos that he uses to persuade you? We will start off second semester reading Night, a memoir by Elie Wiesel. His story is a depressing one, detailing his time in Auschwitz concentration camp. We will read the entire memoir in class together while filling out a reading guide. The reading guide is due this Thursday, January 22nd before we take the big "test" over the novel. The test will be multiple choice, T/F, and essay questions. Review the reading guide and the notes you took during our in-class theme activity to prepare. Here is a link to the Elie Weisel and Oprah documentary we watched in case you want to view the entire interview. |
